Over the past few weeks, various reports have circulated that talk show host Ellen DeGeneres isn’t nearly as nice of a person behind the scenes as she would have you believe. Now, a former staffer of hers has come forward to confirm that these reports are “all true.”

“The stories are all true!” the ex-staffer said, according to Fox News. “Is she always nice? No. It irritates me that people think she’s all sweetness and light and she gets away with it.”

Degeneres has not been “getting away with it” nearly as much lately, as reports seem to keep coming out that she mistreats people behind the scenes. Last month, the crew of her talk show said that she left them in the dark for weeks about pay and their future employment status when production shut down due to coronavirus. A beauty blogger who appeared on DeGeneres’ show earlier this year then came forward to claim that the host was rude to her during the appearance.

Last week, a former security guard who acted as DeGeneres’ bodyguard while she hosted the 2014 Academy Awards said that she was very unfriendly.

“Ellen pretty much just gave me a side glance out of her eye and didn’t even say ‘hello,’ or ‘thank you for protecting my mother, my wife and me,’” Tom Majercak said. “It was very cold and it was very sly and it was actually kind of demeaning in the way that she treats people other than those who are in her circle.”

Podcaster Kevin T. Porter started a viral Twitter thread that branded DeGeneres “one of the meanest people alive,” where others could share their negative stories about the host. He said that DeGeneres’ behavior had long been an “open secret” in Hollywood, and that he has heard numerous not so nice stories about her from those who have worked with her.

Others, however, have spoken out to defend DeGeneres. Her talk show’s executive producer Mary Connelly, who has been with the program from the beginning, said that she has never seen her exhibit diva-like behavior.

“None of what’s being said speaks to the Ellen I know,” Connelly said. “Do the producers and her sometimes have to make unpopular decisions? Yes. Ellen is not afraid to tell you when she doesn’t like something. She’s had tough conversations with me. That’s a function of everyday life. But the person I know is someone who comes in every day and wants to put on a fun show in a fun environment and help people.”

Some have said that DeGeneres’ mantra to “be kind” has backfired on her, since nobody is that sweet all the time.

“One of the things I liked about her was that behind the scenes she had a darker sense of humor,” said Steven Mazan, a former staff writer for the show.
