Kelly Clarkson and Simon Cowell came together last week to reminisce about being originals on “American Idol.”
Clarkson won season one of “American Idol” back in 2002, and Cowell was a judge on the reality television show. While appearing on “The Kelly Clarkson Show” last week, Cowell praised Clarkson as one of the “nicest” people that he has ever met in his life.
“You always knew where you wanted to be after the show [and] the kind of artist you wanted to be,” Cowell said, according to Yahoo News. “You didn’t need anyone to give you that kind of guidance.”
“I use you as an example,” he added. “I genuinely mean this: You’re one of the nicest people I’ve ever met. Most loyal I can say that because we’ve known each other a long time. But if people ever say, ‘What advice can you give me?’ I just say, ‘Follow Kelly.”
The two of them also talked about Clarkson being the advice-giver as a coach on “The Voice,” with Cowell asking how she likes being on the “other side.”
“I feel like I’m a good mix of you and Paula [Abdul],” Clarkson responded. “I’m a cheerleader in a sense. I think I’m a mix of both of you because I am very honest, but I try to be constructive with it.”
“You’re very good, I’ve got to tell you,” Cowell said as he continued to praise her.
Earlier this year, Clarkson opened up about thes career doubts she had after winning “American Idol.”
When talk show host Andy Cohen asked if Clarkson ever thought she would be so successful in her career all these years later, she said that she thought she’d be “the most famous cocktail waitress in Texas.” She then talked about the experience of competing on “American Idol,” describing the life-changing experience as “so pure and raw.”
“Nobody knew, not even the people doing the show knew if it would work or not in America,” she explained.
These days, Clarkson is one of the most successful “American Idol” winners, as she has become both a Grammy-winning artist and a beloved talk show host.
While her career has been successful, Clarkson’s personal life has been a bit more of a struggle. For the past year, she’s been in the midst of a divorce from her husband Brandon Blackstock, and she recently admitted that the split has been “horrible” for her.
