Newly-surfaced reports are coming out stating that Prince Charles once comforted Barack Obama after the former American president made a heartfelt confession to him.

The Express reported that back in 2015, Charles had to offer Obama some consoling words after the then-president realized that Americans preferred British royals to their own politicians. As the two men posed for photos at the White House that year, Obama said, “I think it’s fair to say that the American people are quite fond of the Royal Family. They like them much better than they like their own politicians.”

“I don’t believe that,” Charles said in response.

Charles then tried to save the moment by recalling his visit to the home of revolutionary leader George Washington the day before.

“I tell you what was nice was going back to Mount Vernon yesterday,” Charles said.

It was reported at the time that these comments may not have been meant to be overheard by the public.

“Though carried out in front of a pack of several dozen journalists during a so-called ‘pool spray’ before their private meeting, the quiet exchange could not be heard by those standing just a couple of feet away,” one report stated. “Instead, it was picked up by a boom mike deployed by an Associated Press radio journalist and relayed by a White House pool reporter.”

At the time that this exchange happened, Obama’s personal approval rating had been “under water” for much of his second term, as it was at 47 percent. Meanwhile, Charles had a 57 percent approval rating at the time, ten points higher than the then-president. His mother Queen Elizabeth had an 82 percent approval rating, and his son Prince William’s approval rating was at 77 percent.

Charles has been first in line for the British throne ever since his mother became Queen back in 1952. He has long had plans to slim down the monarchy when he finally does take the throne, which should make the early days of his time as king very interesting.

Obama left office the year after his exchange with Charles. Since then, he has been outspoken about the political situation in the United States.
