Tensions have reportedly grown within the British royal family between Prince Charles and his younger brother Prince Andrew due to the former’s plan to slim down the monarchy. Andrew has a “big issue” with this because his two daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, are excluded from the core group of royals under Charles’ current plans.

“When Charles made his vision for a streamlined monarch very clear around the time of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations, that was a big issue for Prince Andrew,” said royal expert Katie Nicholl, according to The Express. “His view was that they had HRH titles therefore they are blood Princesses, therefore they should be full-time working royals. It didn’t pan out that way and that definitely caused tensions between the royal brothers.”

Both of Andrew’s daughters have jobs outside of the royal family, with Beatrice serving as Vice President of Partnerships and Strategy at software company Afiniti. Meanwhile, her younger sister Eugenie is an Art Director at the Hauser & Wirth gallery. The sisters do not receive funding from the Sovereign Grant, which funds other senior royals, and they are also not given taxpayer-funded security.

When they were born, Andrew had hoped that his daughters would be full-time working royals. That’s why he and his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson decided to give them HRH titles, which they were entitled to as grandchildren of the monarch. Andrew’s siblings Princess Anne and Prince Edward, however, decided not to give their children HRH titles. Anne has said that she wished for her children Zara and Peter Phillips to lead a more normal life, and that there were “downsides to having titles.”

Charles has let it be known that he intends to slim down the monarchy once he becomes King. His plan is to only have the direct heirs to the throne and their immediate family dependent on the Sovereign Grant moving forward. This plan would include Prince William, his wife Kate Middleton, and their three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

Though Beatrice and Eugenie have personal patronages to various organizations, they do not represent the Queen on any formal engagements whatsoever. Their father Andrew has become a controversial figure who has stepped back from royal life in the wake of his ties to the late billionaire pedophile Jeffrey Epstein being exposed.
