Nearly two weeks ago, we reported that Bill Cosby had been freed from prison after his sexual assault conviction was overturned due to a promise a prosecutor made in 2005 that he would not be charged for the crime.
Afterwards, Cosby’s spokesperson indicated that the 83 year-old was interested in launching a comeback on the comedy club circuit that made him famous in the first place.
Now, however, Cosby has already hit a bump in the road when it comes to making this comeback.
Noam Dworman, owner of the renowned Comedy Cellar in New York City, told The New York Post that Cosby will not be welcome at the club. Despite the fact that Dworman allowed Aziz Ansari and Louis C.K. to perform at the club back in 2018 after their respective sexual-misconduct scandals, he said that he would never book Cosby because audiences would not support it.
He went on to say that he draws the line at Cosby because unlike those other two comedians, he was convicted of a crime.
“Comparing Bill Cosby to these other guys is absurd,” Dworman said. “I didn’t want to talk about this to begin with. I just think these comparisons are ridiculous.”
Cosby spokesman Andrew Wyatt fired back by saying that the disgraced comedian is unfazed by this snub.
“That’s one club owner, and in the words of the King of R&B Bobby Brown, ‘It’s his prerogative to do what he wants to do,'” Wyatt said.
Wyatt previously claimed that there is great interest from audiences in seeing Cosby perform again.
“He’s doing fantastic — he stayed up until two in the morning telling jokes,” Wyatt told The Philadelphia Inquirer.
“He’s been talking to a number of promoters and comedy club owners over his breakfast this morning,” Wyatt added. “He’s just excited the way the world is welcoming him back. A number of promoters have called. Comedy club owners have called. People want to see him.”
Cosby had served over two years of a three-to-ten year sentence for the sexual assault of Andrea Constand. An appeals court overturned the conviction this week because of a previous agreement with a prosecutor that Cosby would not be charged for this crime.
