Queen Elizabeth appeared to extend an olive branch to Meghan Markle and Prince Harry this week when she invited them to the Platinum Jubilee celebrations next summer.

Daily Mail reported that Meghan and Harry are expected to attend the Queen’s official birthday parade, the Trooping the Colour, which is part of the four-day festivities to mark her 70 years on the throne. However, it is not clear if they , will appear on the Buckingham Palace balcony beside the Queen and other senior royals for the traditional Royal Air Force flyover.

“The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been invited and I’m sure the Queen is very much looking forward to seeing them there,” said one royal source. “The balcony moment will be decided much nearer the time but there’s a limit to how many family members should be on it, and I would have thought that working Royals who contribute to the family would be higher on the list than the Sussexes.”

Since stepping down as senior royals last year, Meghan and Harry have repeatedly trashed the royal family in interviews, which could make things awkward for them when they attend the Queen’s birthday parade.

“In public, the Queen has bent over backwards to try and [help Meghan and Harry],” royal expert Phil Dampier said, according to The Express. “But in private she’s devastated by what’s happened. She had high hopes for Meghan and Harry with going out into the Commonwealth but it’s all been thrown back in her face. She must be very, very upset by it.”

Royal expert Ingrid Seward agreed, saying that the Queen is “saddened” by the current situation.

“The Commonwealth is her baby, that’s what Prince Philip says, so I really feel that she’s so saddened,” Seward explained. “But she will not put up with rudeness and she dislikes intensely private conversations being repeated. Both of which, things Harry and Meghan are doing a lot of the time. Maybe not personally but through their LA publicists.”

Other royal experts feel similarly.

“I think without a doubt the Royal Family are growing increasingly fed up with the behaviour of Meghan and Harry, and also British public opinion is turning firmly against Meghan and Harry as well,” added royal commentator Nile Gardiner, according to The Telegraph.

“You’re seeing the Royal Family really closing ranks here,” he continued. “Without a doubt, I think that Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have behaved in a less than exemplary fashion in recent months, launching a series of direct attacks against the monarchy and of course, the Queen is the head of the monarchy.”

“So I think the feeling within the Royal Family is that the behavior of Meghan and Harry leaves much to be desired,” Gardiner stated, going on to add that we’re seeing “the Royal Family coming together and distancing” themselves from Harry and Meghan.
