While Prince Charles has let it be known that he is committed to slimming down the British monarchy, he likely won’t strip his grandchildren Archie and Lili of their titles, according to one royal expert.

Royal historian Robert Lacey told People Magazine that though there has been speculation that Charles will strip the children of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry of their titles, he will likely go by tradition, which dictates that prince or princess titles are automatically granted to all his grandchildren when he ascends to the throne.

“I don’t think he will make the unpopular and hostile move of removing the royal status of his grandchildren,” Lacey explained.

Lacey said that Charles will likely instead focus on upgrading his wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall from princess consort to Queen. He believes Charles will honor the rule that was established by King George V after he issued a Letters Patent in 1917 that read: “…the grandchildren of the sons of any such sovereign in the direct male line (save only the eldest living son of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales) shall have and enjoy in all occasions the style and title enjoyed by the children of dukes of these our realms.”

“As the grandchildren of the Sovereign, they have the right to be upgraded to the style of His or Her Royal Highness,” said Joe Little, managing editor of Majesty magazine. “But that begs a question of whether Harry and Meghan want that. Do they prefer what [Prince] Edward and Sophie have, and not have their children as Their Royal Highnesses with a view to them leading relatively normal lives?”

Meghan and Harry told Oprah Winfrey back in March that they were upset when they were told that Archie would not have a title.

“They [the Royal Family] were saying they didn’t want him to be a Prince or a Princess,” Meghan said in the interview. “You know, the other piece of that convention is, there’s a convention – I forget if it was George V or George VI convention – that when you’re the grandchild of the monarch, so when Harry’s dad becomes King, automatically Archie and our next baby would become Prince or Princess, or whatever they were going to be… But also it’s not their right to take it away.”

This left royal fans puzzled, however, as Meghan and Harry had very publicly declared that they didn’t want a title for their son, who would be known as Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor.
