Joan Rivers has been dead for seven years, but she is still dearly missed by millions of fans to this day. Now, her daughter Melissa is speaking out to recall some hilarious and unusual advice that her mother once gave her.
While appearing on the “Divorced Not Dead” podcast, Melissa revealed that after her divorce, her mother encouraged her to be more sexually free.
“People are always shocked to find that I had a very traditional childhood where it was always very clear that what [my parents] did for a living was completely separate,” Melissa said. “I always understood that who my mother was on stage was not who my mother was, and my father was very grounding.”
“So I think because of that very traditional upbringing, when I was dating — after I got married, it caught me by surprise when my mom was like, ‘You need to be much sluttier.’ She’s like, ‘You need to put it out there.’ I’m like, ‘Oh my god, really?’” she added. “My mother was like, ‘Enjoy it while you’re young, show it up.”
Joan also reportedly told her only child to embrace heels, cleavage and mini-skirts
“Once I [became] an adult, my mom’s like, ‘Girl, shorten that skirt, push up those boobs, put on some lifts,” Melissa claimed.
Page Six reported that last summer, Melissa announced that Joan’s estate has plans to release hours of new material from the late comic at some point during 2021.
“While hundreds of hours of my mother on tape sounds great to her fans, to my therapist it sounds like another beach house,” Melissa said at the time. “Thankfully, mom was meticulous about saving everything, and some of her best routines, collected over literally decades, are going to soon be available. For that we really can be grateful.”
Joan tragically passed away back in 2014 at the age of 81 after experiencing serious complications while undergoing a routine throat procedure.
“It is with great sadness that I announce the death of my mother, Joan Rivers,” Melissa said in a statement at the time of her death. “She passed peacefully at 1:17 p.m. surrounded by family and close friends. My son and I would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff of Mount Sinai Hospital for the amazing care they provided for my mother.”
“Cooper and I have found ourselves humbled by the outpouring of love, support, and prayers we have received from around the world,” she added. “They have been heard and appreciated. My mother’s greatest joy in life was to make people laugh. Although that is difficult to do right now, I know her final wish would be that we return to laughing soon.”
