It has just been announced that the actor Kevin Spacey is launching his Hollywood comeback, as he’s been cast in his first film role since accusations of sexual assault were first made about him nearly four years ago.
Spacey, 61, has been cast as a police detective in Franco Nero’s Italian film L’uomo Che Disegnò Dio, which will also star the director’s wife, Vanessa Redgrave.
“I’m very happy Kevin agreed to participate in my film,” Nero told ABC News. “I consider him a great actor and I can’t wait to start the movie.”
Spacey has yet to comment on the upcoming role.
Spacey is a two-time Oscar winner who had a hugely successful Hollywood career before “Star Trek” actor Anthony Rapp came forward in October of 2017 to claim that Spacey inappropriate sexual advances toward him when Rapp, now 49, was only 14. Rapp made the allegations in a BuzzFeed article, and Spacey responded hours later by apologizing and coming out as a gay man.
Rapp claimed that Spacey, who was 26 at the time, invited him to his Manhattan apartment for a party in 1986. At the time, each of them were starring in plays on Broadway. Rapp was the only teenager at the party, and he spent most of the night watching TV in the bedroom before he realized that everyone had left and he was now alone with Spacey.
“He was trying to seduce me,” Rapp said of Spacey. “I don’t know if I would have used that language. But I was aware that he was trying to get with me sexually.”
Spacey released a statement later that day apologizing for “what would have been deeply inappropriate drunken behavior” and announcing, “I choose now to live as a gay man,” according to People Magazine. Since then, multiple other people have come forward to accuse Spacey, and investigations have been launched into them.
Spacey lost his role starring on the hit Netflix series “House of Cards” after the scandal broke, and he has effectively been blacklisted from Hollywood ever since. Variety reported that the last movie Spacey starred in was 2018’s Billionaire Boys Club, which flopped at the box office.
