Just one month after the death of her husband of 73 years, Queen Elizabeth has been hit with another crushing blow, as one of her beloved “dorgi” puppies has also passed away. The animal was only about 5 months-old.

Fergus was one of the two dachshund-corgi crosses that were given to the Queen as a surprise gift by her son Prince Andrew back in February to comfort her during her husband Prince Philip’s illness. The Queen, 95, reportedly walked Fergus and the other dog Muick most days in the grounds of Windsor Castle.

“The Queen is absolutely devastated,” a Windsor Castle insider told The Sun. “The puppies were brought in to cheer her up during a very difficult period. Everyone concerned is upset as this comes so soon after she lost her husband. On top of that there’s been the problems with her grandson, Harry.”

The Queen named the puppy Fergus after her uncle, Cpt Fergus Bowes-Lyon, who died in 1915 at the age of 26 while leading an attack on German lines at the Battle of Loos in France during World War One. The Queen now only has Muick, which is pronounced Mick and named after a beauty spot in Balmoral, Scotland, and an older dorgi named Candy.

Candy is the last surviving descendant of corgi Susan who was given to the Queen on her 18th birthday. She’s had a passion for raising dorgis and corgis ever since, but after the death of her corgi Vulcan back in October, it was believed that she was giving up owning pets because aides feared they were a tripping hazard. This made the gift of Fergus and Muick to the Queen all the more special.

This comes at a difficult time for the Queen, as it’s only been about six weeks since her beloved husband Prince Philip passed away at the age of 99. When the Queen celebrated her 95th birthday just days later, she issued a rare personal statement in which she thanked the public for the support they’ve given her since the passing of the man she was madly in love with for 73 years.

“I have, on the occasion of my 95th birthday today, received many messages of good wishes, which I very much appreciate,” the Queen said. “While as a family we are in a period of great sadness, it has been a comfort to us all to see and to hear the tributes paid to my husband, from those within the United Kingdom, the Commonwealth and around the world.”

“My family and I would like to thank you all for the support and kindness shown to us in recent days,” she added. “We have been deeply touched, and continue to be reminded that Philip had such an extraordinary impact on countless people throughout his life.”
