The former “Fuller House” star Candace Cameron Bure, who happens to be turning 45 today, has something that is a rarity in Hollywood: a marriage that has actually stood the test of time, as she has been married to former professional hockey player Valeri Bure for nearly 25 years.

While Bure has managed to make her marriage last, she’s been open about the fact that doing so has been far from easy. In a recent interview with Yahoo! Lifestyle, she admitted that COVID-19 quarantine took a toll on her marriage last year, saying it “got really hairy after the first few months. Like, bad.”

After being on lockdown in a house together for months, Bure added that, “All the things that we have avoided for years talking about, they all surfaced and they were in our face, and it was unavoidable to actually have these discussions with one another and work through the real deal crap.”

In the end, it was Bure’s children who stepped up to help her and her husband work things out.

“My children were the biggest influence in helping my husband and me work through it,” she said. “And since then, the relationship has grown even closer and tighter. There’s always hills and valleys, no matter what. But when you come out of the valley, it is like, hallelujah. You feel like you can accomplish anything.”

This was not the first time that Bure has been open to the world about the ups and downs of marriage.

“Marriage is a wonderful, beautiful thing but there’s always going to be tough times,” she told Us Weekly back in 2018. “There’s no one that has this amazingly perfect marriage….You just hang in there and stick with it.”

Bure met her husband back in 1994 through her “Full House” costar Dave Coulier, who is a huge hockey fan. During a 2007 interview with Today, Bure said that Coulier “was at a celebrity charity game playing, and he invited the cast down. He pulled me over to the side and said, ‘I met this really cute Russian hockey player and I want to introduce you.'”

“Val had just come from Moscow, Russia, and it turned out he would watch ‘Full House’ to learn English,” Bure continued.

They went on their first date the next day, and the rest, as they say, is history. They wed in 1996, and they would go on to have three children together.

When celebrating their 20th wedding anniversary in 2016, Bure was open once again about the struggles they’ve had, but she made it clear that she wants to keep going with him in life.

“I couldn’t be more proud to be here and love my man the way I do. But let me assure you it hasn’t been all roses the whole journey,” she said at the time, according to E! Online. “There have been several tough years, in a row, ups and downs, bad attitudes and bad decisions, but we’ve persevered. We rode them out. We loved each other through them. We kept the focus; God’s glory. We are both better for it.”

In the end, Bure credits a strong foundation of faith with how she and Valeri have stood the test of time.

“The reality is the glue for us is Jesus,” she told People Magazine in 2018. “It’s the Bible. You know, when there are arguments or we’re compromising and in ways, it’s always like, ‘Well, let’s just go back to the Bible.’ It’s the foundation for us.”

While quarantine was difficult for Bure and her husband, she said in November that they are doing better than ever these days.

“We both travel so much. So we were like, ‘This might be the most amount of time we’ve actually spent together in years. This is either going to make us or break us,'” she said. “And you know what? It’s made us.”
