In a new documentary that aired last night, a royal expert claimed that Queen Elizabeth is “frustrated” and “puzzled” by her oldest son Prince Charles, who she feels will “never live up to her sense of duty.” The expert added that the Queen is much closer to her younger son Prince Andrew, who has become a controversial figure as of late.
The Daily Mail reported that royal author Clive Irving appeared on the program “Queen Elizabeth: Love, Honour and Crown,” from Britain’s Channel 4 to claim that the 94 year-old Queen “has never really understood” Charles, who has been the heir to the throne since she was coronated back in 1952.
“To this day, she’s more openly affectionate to Andrew and more forgiving toward Andrew than she is towards Charles,” said Irving, who wrote the new biography “The Last Queen.”
Irving also said that the Prince William is the only member of the royal family who fully appreciates the Queen’s “very dedicated sense of duty.”
“All those around the Queen never measure up to that at any point. Her own family has not measured up to that. Charles never measures up to that,” Irving said.
Ingrid Seward, editor-in-chief of Majesty magazine, appeared in the documentary as well to describe Andrew as “noisy, bumptious,” but also “very charming, when he wants to be.”
“He can be arrogant and rude; he has some characteristics of his own father,” Seward added, referring to Prince Philip.
She went on to add that Charles, 74, is “the polar opposite to younger brother Andrew.” Seward also said that Charles “will never live up to the queen’s sense of duty.”
This comes at a difficult time for the British royal family, as it’s been just two weeks since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s explosive tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey. During the interview, Meghan claimed that she was hit with racism from within the royal family, claiming that an unnamed senior royal questioned how dark her then-unborn son Archie’s skin would be. Harry refused to name this family member, only saying that it was neither Queen Elizabeth nor Prince Philip. Meghan also claimed that she felt so isolated as a royal that she considered committing suicide at one point during her pregnancy.
The Queen responded in a brief statement released through Buckingham Palace.
“The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan,” the royal statement read, according to Fox News. “The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning. While some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately. Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved family members.”
