A women from Nebraska is taking the tragic loss of her husband on February 26th and establishing his final legacy through a humorous obituary. Crystal and Eric Sauser were married for 13 years before Eric finally succumbed to a two-year battle with cancer.

In those 13 years, the couple became parents to Amelia, age 11, Violet, age 9, and Benjamin, age 5. It was in early 2019 while carrying his daughter upstairs that Eric got his first idea that something might be wrong with his health. When he reached the top of the stairs, the 41-year-old dental assistant became extremely winded. It was also at this time when he started experiencing severe night sweats.

After finally going to get checked out by his doctor in April of 2019, bloodwork revealed that Eric had leukemia. The couple were completely taken, but quickly set their minds on the task of beating the disease. In speaking to GMA, Crystal shared:

“We were shocked. Eric said nothing but, ‘Oh well, it’s fine. We are going to just deal with this.’ So, that was our mantra and that’s what we followed. He and I are absolutely complete opposites, but the way we managed this was as a team,” she added. “We went in with open eyes and said, ‘We are going to do what we have to do to fight this.'”

An aggressive treatment plan consisting of stem cell transplants and several other therapies and treatments initial showed promising results, but Eric’s cancer was progressing again by April 2020.

“At that point Eric said, ‘Enough is enough. I’m putting you guys through way too much,'” Sauser said. “But through the entire journey, Eric was such an amazing guy. He always had a smile on his face … he was more worried what was going on with everyone else than him.”

After Eric passed, Crystal took on the task of writing her husband’s obituary. Ass he sat in the funeral home looking at templates, she was underwhelmed by what she saw, finding nothing that captured her husband’s warm and quirky personality. So she decided to part with convention and write her own obituary in a style that represented her husband more accurately.

What she came up with was a heartfelt yet hilarious description of a loving husband and father, and loyal friend.

The obituary was posted to the Roeder Mortuary website and reads as follows:

“Eric A. Sauser, AKA Super Dad, AKA Easy, just a rockin’ dude from Omaha, NE passed away peacefully in his sleep on Friday, February 26, 2021, at the age of 43 with his wife by his side. His departure was just in time for him to make his spiritual appearance at every Red Sox spring game. Eric is survived by his wife, Crystal and three children, Amelia, Violet and Benjamin all of whom will likely sleep in the same bed for many years to come (sorry, Eric).

He is also survived by his loving and caring parents, Ronnie and Paula Sauser, and his sister and aunt extraordinaire, Jessica Sauser. In addition to his immediate family, Eric leaves behind an incredible extended family and many, many friends. He is preceded in death by billions, including his dog Harvey who most of us loved to hate. We are confident they are joyfully reconnecting right now. If you knew Eric, you knew you were loved, and there is a good chance he told you that – probably sober, but maybe not.

During his time here, he found a way into everyone’s heart. Eric loved, in this order, his smoking hot wife, his brilliant kids and family, his many friends, the Boston Red Sox, the Kansas City Chiefs (before being a Chiefs fan was cool), the Huskers, Liverpool Futbol, QT iced tea, Adidas sneakers, fishing, backpacking, hiking, hunting, and any old Chevy he saw on the road.

Eric hated sad stories, beets, romantic comedies, a snow packed driveway and turning off the garage light. That’s it. Eric was content with most everything else. We are not positive, but we think the cause of death was either leukemia or more likely being “dead sexy”. Eric, we’ve always loved you and miss you already.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, March 4, 2021, at 2pm at Roeder Mortuary, 2727 N 108th St. The family will receive guests from 1-2pm with the Service following. Admission is free to all who attend this once in a lifetime show for the greatest man on earth. Following the Service, the family requests jamming out to Ozzy Osborne and raising a cold beer (preferably Busch Light) in celebration of Eric’s life. In lieu of flowers, please pray that the Huskers have a winning season, or send a donation to The Leukemia And Lymphoma Society in Eric’s name. He would appreciate either or both.”

After posting a copy of the obituary on social media, it quickly went viral, and Crystal received a ton of messages of support and praise for choosing to celebrate her husband’s life instead of only mourning his death. She has been encouraged by the impact her husband’s life has had on others, even after his death.

“Some of the coolest things [I read] are, ‘This guy’s an inspiration’ and ‘I hope this changes the way obituaries are written today,'” Sauser said to GMA.
