Chip Gaines shocked his fans this week by opening up about some of the struggles that he faced when it came to dealing with fame after the success of his show “Fixer Upper.” He also talked about how his wife Joanna went above and beyond to get him through these hard times.

Chip and Joanna sat down with Oprah Winfrey for a “Super Soul”special that premieres on Discovery+ on March 13. In a clip of the interview that was obtained by People Magazine, Oprah asked the couple about how being famous has affected them, and about their choice to take a year off after “Fixer Upper” came to an end back in 2018.

“I have discovered that fame is just, your life is the same, you’re the same, and everybody has an idea of what that is, it’s just more people know your name. And I think if you don’t know who you are when the fame thing hits then you lose yourself,” Oprah said. “Did you all start to sense that, or did you know that you were grounded before the fame thing hit?”

The legendary talk show host then asked a follow up, wondering if they “took the time off because [they] wanted to reground?”

“I want to speak on Jo’s behalf, because she would never say things like this, but she is so incredibly wise, so incredibly grounded — all the things that you just described, is who Joanna is,” Chip said, adding that in the earlier years of the show, he struggled with handling fame more than his wife of 18 years did.

“Really what happened — and was the truth for Jo and I — was it was no big deal for her, but for me to become famous, I lost a part of myself that was really… it was sad,” he admitted. “I would say it took me a year or two while I was still filming to try to grapple with what exactly it was that I was losing.”

Chip went on to say that the year they spent out of the public eye gave him and Joanna a chance to “hunker down and really kind of try to unpack what it was about fame that seemed so incompatible with my personality.”

Oprah’s interview with Chip and Joanna looks to be incredibly similar to the one she had with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle just a few days ago. It remains to be seen if the Gaines’ interview will have the kind of bombshell revelation that the royal one did!
