At 91 years of age, L.C. “Buckshot” Smith is the oldest police officer in the state of Arkansas, and virtually everyone in the town of Camden knows his name.
Though Smith is moving a little slower these days, he still walks the beat around his town four days a week.
“This badge and gun don’t make a you a police officer,” Smith told CBS News. “You got to respect people.”
Smith became a beloved local celebrity of sorts during the more than forty years that he spent working for the Ouachita County Sheriff’s Department, where he always went by his childhood nickname of “Buckshot.” After spending 46 years working as a deputy, Smith finally decided to retire, but this only lasted for five months.
Smith quickly found that he was bored in retirement, explaining, “I don’t hunt. I don’t fish.” That’s why he decided to become a rookie Camden cop, and he’s been working as that ever since.
Mayor Julian Lott said that while Smith carries a firearm, he never has to use it because he has a far more powerful weapon.
“He knows your mama and he knew your grandmother,” Lott explained. “So he has the authority to speak into our lives.”
Smith said that throughout his lengthy career, he has “taken more people home than I’ve taken to them to jail.”
As for a second retirement, that won’t be happening anytime soon.
“He does not want to retire,” said chief Boyd Woody. ‘In his words, to me, he’ll retire when the good Lord tells him to.”
Until the good Lord gives him that sign, Smith fully intends to keep rolling and patrolling. He would not have it any other way!
Support for Smith has been pouring in since his story went viral.
“He looks like he’s still in great health and have good eyesight and memory. Rock on brotha!” one social media user commented, with another adding, “God Bless this officer! Thank you Law Enforcement for your service.”
“I like his answer to how many people he’s taken to jail. ‘I’ve taken more people home, than I’ve taken to jail,'” a third user commented. “If only more officers could follow that example.”
