The NBA star Steph Curry and his wife Ayesha have really stepped up during the COVID-19 pandemic, as their foundation served over 15 million meals to families in need in 2020.

Back in 2019, Steph and Ayesha launched Eat. Learn. Play. in the hopes of helping youths in underserved communities. Before the coronavirus pandemic hit, the foundation provided meals for the approximately 25% of Oakland school children who have food insecurity.

From there, however, the need grew exponentially.

“We’ve seen what COVID has done to the community at large. There’s a steep learning curve, in getting set up to do this work, but we don’t have to work through that. Amidst the uncertainty and chaos, we are in position to make an impact,” Steph told The San Francisco Chronicle back in April.

Before long, Steph and Ayesha’s foundation went from providing food for 4,000 families a week in February to providing 300,000 meals a week. The foundation then teamed up with Chef Andrés’ World Central Kitchen to procure meals from “more than 130 Oakland restaurants.”

In September, Eat. Learn. Play. announced a partnership with Kaiser Permanente that saw them distributing 50,000 meals to Oakland, California families. The foundation recently released a statement saying that they have served “well over 15 million meals” during the pandemic.

“We launched Eat. Learn. Play. because we see the tremendous need that exists all around us and want to do what we can to help improve the lives of kids and families in Oakland, the Bay Area, and across the country,” Steph and Ayesha said in a statement on their website. “Rooted in three of the most vital pillars for a healthy childhood— nutrition, education and physical activity— Eat. Learn. Play. is designed to help ensure an equal road to success for all kids.”

“Children are our future and we are deeply dedicated to empowering them and opening doors for their futures. As parents, we see a multitude of unique opportunities our kids have access to, and our hope is that Eat. Learn. Play. will positively impact children in our community and beyond to live out their dreams,” they added. “This journey is just beginning. We hope you’ll join us in unlocking the amazing potential of every child.”
