Some loves stay with you forever, no matter how much time has passed. That’s exactly how it was for childhood sweethearts Dennis and Diane Reynolds. The two met when they were 13 years old in homeroom of their junior high school in Los Angeles. The two were inseparable all through high school and five months after graduation, the two got married on November 11, 1961.

Four years and two children later, the couple decided to divorce. Dennis went on to re-marry twice, eventually losing his second wife Bonnie 2000 after 21 years of marriage. After Bonnie’s death he re-married again, this time to Cher, who passed away in 2018.

Diane re-married in 1967 and had four children with her husband John, who passed away 1981, and she never married again. Once their boys were grown, Dennis and Diane had no reason to have contact with each other any more.

The tragic deaths of both their sons couldn’t even bring the two back together in any meaningful way. In 1989 their 25-year-old son, Keith, committed suicide after learning he had contracted AIDS. Their other son, Curtis, passed away in 2001 at age 38 due to severe complications from injuries he sustained while serving in the military.

Fast forward 18 years when Diane suffered a devastating fall on her way to work in 2019, which required her to permanently go on disability. Of this sudden new phase of life, Diane told PEOPLE:

“I wasn’t recuperating very well, and I said, ‘God, I’d like to have a relationship with somebody. And the next day, Dennis called me.”

Dennis had this to say about reaching out to his first wife:

“She’s the mother of my children. I grew up with her… so I did have deep inset emotions about her. And I was kind of curious — I’m here by myself and I don’t like to be by myself — and I said, ‘Well, I’m going to give her a call.'”

After that initial call, the two began speaking regularly. Diane flew out to Las Vegas where Dennis lived so the two could catch up in person. The two had such a great time together, and Diane decided to move in with Dennis in February 2020. The two married each other for the second time on November 11, 2020–the date that would have been their 59th wedding anniversary.

“We get along so well,” says Diane. “We have a good time. We laugh a lot.”

Dennis is equally smitten by his “new” bride:

“[The best part is] waking up and seeing her every morning.”

The couple are in the process of building their brand new love nest, complete with a swimming pool and two-person sofa.

“We’re going to swim every day and we’re going to cuddle on that little couch that we bought,” adds Diane. “We’re just going to enjoy every minute.”
