A dog from Maine is being hailed as a hero after she saved her elderly blind owner, who had fallen in a freezing cold brook.

WCSH reported that the 84 year-old legally blind man had been trying to put his yellow Labrador Samantha in a dog run when he slipped and fell in the brook. Minutes later, a woman heard a man yelling in the woods behind her home, which prompted her to call the police.

When officers arrived on the scene, they found Samantha, who refused to stop barking until she had led the cops to the brook her owner had fallen in. The blind man was powerless to find his way out of the brook, and he was already getting hypothermia when officers found him. In fact, officials said that the elderly man’s body temperature had dropped to 84 degrees.

Thankfully, officers were able to remove the man from the pond and get him to safety, all thanks to Samantha!

Samantha isn’t the only dog to be hailed as a hero for saving their elderly owner lately. Over the summer, 88-year-old Gwendola Johnson was saved by her beloved dog Sandy after she fell outside of her house.

“I didn’t really hurt myself, but I couldn’t get up,” Johnson explained to NBC Los Angeles.

As she lay on the ground helplessly, Johnson caught sight of Kirk White of Glendale Integrated Waste Management walking up her driveway pulling in her trash cans. That’s when Sandy stepped in to save his elderly owner.

“When I saw him, I said to Sandy, ‘You go get him,’ so he did,” Johnson recalled.

Security footage shows Sandy running to White and barking at him, desperately trying to let him know that something was very wrong.

“The way he was barking, like, ‘I have something to show you — come follow me this way, there’s something I want you to see,'” White told reporters.

Sandy led White right to Johnson, and he proceeded to help her back up on her feet. She was thankfully not left with any injuries.

Both of these stories serve of a reminder as to why dogs are known as man’s best friend!
