With all the horrors going on in the world today, it’s easy to forget that there are still good people out there who are doing kind things for others.  That’s why it’s so heartwarming that a story is going viral this week in which a homeless man performs an act of kindness and gets an incredible reward for it.

Evelyn Topper was leaving a coffee shop in San Rafael, California with her granddaughter Mikayla Gounard when she dropped her wallet, though she did not realize that she had done so until she got home. Topper understandably went into panic mode as soon as she saw that her wallet was gone, as it contained cash as well as all of her credit, debit, and medical cards.

The next day, however, Topper received a phone call that restored her faith in the world.

Sean Curry is a homeless man who found the walled in a dumpster behind the coffee shop. The cash was gone, but all of the other contents of the wallet were fully intact. Despite the fact that Curry had been homeless for five years, he still did not want to take the wallet for himself, so he made arrangements to return it to Topper.

Though Topper praised Curry for his good deed, he did not think he had done anything unusual, telling NBC that he gave the wallet back because he “[had] a heart” and “that’s the way I was brought up.”

Curry wasn’t expecting any reward for his good deed, but Topper’s granddaughter Mikayla Gounard had other ideas. She had already planned a socially distant “drive-by” party for her upcoming 12th birthday, and in lieu of presents, she’d asked for donations that would be given to a charity of her choice. Gounard hadn’t chosen a charity yet, but when she learned what Curry had done for her grandmother, she knew exactly where she wanted her donations to go.

On the day of her party, Gounard placed a collection box next to a photo of Curry at the end of her driveway, and by the time the party was over, she’d raised several hundred dollars.

When Gounard and her mother met up with Curry the next day to give him the money, he could not believe what the little girl had done for him. Gounard explained that like Curry, she had simply done her good deed because it was the right thing to do.

“I think it’s really important that people who think that because you got pushed down you can never get back up again,” Gounard said.
