Many people who are married firmly believe that divorce is not an option for them, and country music star Miranda Lambert was one of them during her marriage to her fellow singer Blake Shelton. That’s why it came as a shock to fans when the couple divorced in 2015.
In an interview after their divorce, Lambert addressed the fact that she had said that splitting was never an option for them.
Lambert and Shelton married in 2011, and while they were open about their love for each other, they also talked about how difficult it was to keep their relationship going strong when they were both touring.
“You know, it’s not easy all the time being on opposite sides of the country and, you know, traveling and all that,” Lambert said in 2013, according to Country Weekly. “But when you get to celebrate moments like this together and when you go through the hard stuff together, those are the moments that actually count. All the rest is fluff.”
She went on to explain that she was trying to model her own marriage after that of her parents, who have remained devoted to not another for decades.
“Like I always say, my mom said to my dad, ‘Divorce is not an option.’ So, we really love each other and have a real marriage outside of all of this,” Lambert said.
Happy anniversary mom and dad!! I’m so proud of them and the life and businesses they’ve built. Sending a toast out to y’all with some of The Lambert Family @red55winery today! Cheers!! pic.twitter.com/SZFhzhna1W

Sadly, Lambert and Shelton called it quits in 2015, saying in a statement obtained by E! News at the time, “We are real people, with real lives, with real families, friends and colleagues. Therefore, we kindly ask for privacy and compassion concerning this very personal matter.”
Lambert later acknowledged saying that divorce was not an option in an interview with Cosmopolitan.
“You go into things and give it everything you have,” Lambert explained. “I was taught that, and I did that. And I will do that with everything in my life. I’ve made those proclamations like ‘Divorce is not an option!’ You just say things and you hope that you’re right, but it’s fine if you’re not.”
She went on to say that her views on marriage have changed.
“If I ever were to get married again—which is completely not on my radar at all right now— I feel like it’s not about it being a step in life,” Lambert said. “It’s not about a piece of paper or a diamond. It’s the way you feel about somebody and the commitment in your heart.”
Lambert has since found love again, marrying Brendan McLoughlin last year. Shelton has also found love, recently becoming engaged to his fellow singer Gwen Stefani.
