Christmas came early for one grandmother in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Right before Thanksgiving a local Secret Santa surprised the hardworking 65-year-old with the life changing gift of a new car.

For six years now, Nate Eaton, news manager for the East Idaho News community website has represented a Secret Santa from the area who searches each year for a special individual from the community to bless.

This year, Santa’s watchful eye fell on Diana Boldman. Diana works the morning shift at a local McDonald’s, but before she clocks in, she and her husband of 42 years, Cameron, deliver 150 newspapers around Idaho Falls.

Cameron, who is also 65 and disabled due to a variety of health issues, often had to wake his daughter at 3:00 in the mornings so she could provide a jump for the battery in their worn-out Dodge Caravan that had logged more than 240,000 miles.

But that all changed when Nate Eaton walked into Diana’s McDonald’s and informed her that this year, she was the lucky recipient of the Secret Santa’s generosity.

Eaton handed Diana the keys to a fully paid for 2019 Hyundai Tucson, along with $5000 worth of gift cards to go towards gas and maintenance, as well as an additional $1000 which would cover registration for the vehicle.

Diana told Today that she immediately recognized Nate Eaton when he came into McDonald’s that morning, but was shocked to learn he was there to bestow Christmas blessings on her. Cameron was equally shocked to hear the news when Diana called to inform him of their exciting new Christmas gift.

Speaking to Today, Cameron says, “Right after the interview with Nate Eaton was over, Diana calls me in tears and says, ‘Cam, I need to pick you up in about five minutes. I want you to drive the new SUV that just was given to us. We need to go down to the dealership and get the papers.'”

“The new car is so nice to drive. It has 4-wheel drive and I’ve been using that on the icy roads on our paper route. We feel much safer,” he continued.

Recipients of Idaho Falls’ Secret Santa gifts are still clueless to his real identity, but that’s because his goal is to just be a blessing to his neighbors, and that in and of itself is all the satisfaction he needs.

Eaton shared that the community submits nominations for those they believe would be worthy recipients of the Secret Santa’s generosity. “These are generally people who never ask for help. They’re humble. They’re not asking for handouts or assistance,” he said.

Past recipients have had assistance obtaining hearing aids, dentures, and prosthetics that couldn’t be afforded.

These days, the Boldman’s early morning paper route is a much more enjoyable task to undertake. And there’s no doubt the couple’s daughter appreciates no longer being needed for battery jumps in the early morning hours.
