In the crazy world of Hollywood, it’s rare to find a relationship that is able to actually stand the test of time. That’s what makes it so heartwarming and impressive that former “Happy Days” star and “Hillbilly Elegy” director Ron Howard is still married to his high school sweetheart Cheryl after 45 years!
Howard was a junior at John Burroughs High School in Burbank, California when he met Cheryl, and he knew right away that she was the one.
“I met her, and there was never anybody else,” he told People Magazine.
Howard added that the secret behind their decades-long romance is “communication.”
“People say, ‘How’d you do it?’ There’s no technique. There’s no tactic other than communication is really important. You have to learn to communicate and have difficult conversations in constructive ways,” he explained. “Beyond that, there’s an element of luck because people either grow together or they don’t and I don’t think you can force that.”
Howard went on to gush about Cheryl, saying that she has been incredibly supportive over the years.
“She’s unbelievably supportive and always has been,” Howard said of Cheryl. “Our compatibility has endured through all kinds of experiences.”

Howard and Cheryl are the parents of four children: twin daughters Jocelyn and Paige, actress Bryce Dallas Howard, and son Reed. Cheryl has also launched a career as a writer, penning the novel In The Face of Jinn, which she says was inspired by the stories she heard as a child.
“As a child I was consumed with adventure stories, fairy tales, and real-life accounts of people who had traveled around the globe,” she said.
As for Howard, he successfully made the transition from child star to adult actor to renowned film director. In 2001, he even won the Best Director Academy Award for his movie A Beautiful Mind.
“I was an actor who dreamed of being a director,” Howard said last year.
With divorces so common among the celebrities of Hollywood, Howard’s decades-long marriage is exceedingly rare. We applaud him and his wife for sticking together through thick and thin, and for showing us all what a quality Hollywood marriage looks like!
