Country music star Kenny Chesney was forced to postpone his 2020 Chillaxification Tour this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, much to the dismay of his millions of fans. Though he didn’t hit the road this year, however, Chesney was not about to abandon his 120 employees who depend on him for work amidst a pandemic. In fact, he decided to go above and beyond to help them by paying them all!
In an interview with the L.A. Times earlier this year, Chesney confirmed that all of his employees are still going to be paid this year despite the fact that he isn’t touring.
“As we got into March and festivals started canceling — I saw the Stones move their stadium dates — I got really nervous, as anybody would be that employs as many people as I do,” he said. “I have 120 employees. Thank God I don’t have to let anybody go this year. Now, if we don’t play the next two or three years, it’s really gonna change the dynamic of my life. And I’m not gonna lie — it’s expensive.”
When asked how much it would cost him to keep his 120 employees in the payroll, Chesney refused to go into specifics about numbers.
“I don’t want to get into numbers. But it’s a lot of money. A lot of money,” he said. “The initial shock of it, I looked at the numbers and went, Oh my God, this is overwhelming. And, look, it’s affecting my life — I’m not gonna say it’s not. But I had to make a decision if I was gonna keep my lifestyle the way it was or if I’m gonna take care of my people.”
Chesney also managed to have some fun in this interview by revealing the shocking place that he did managed to do a show early in 2020.
“I can’t believe I’m telling you this, but I did a wedding in Florida at the beginning of March. And I don’t play weddings. But it was worth it,” he said.
Making this even more surprising is the fact that it was not a wedding of a friend or close relative!
“Nope. Just somebody that REALLY wanted me to play his daughter’s wedding,” Chesney added.
One thing is for sure, Chesney is truly class act! God bless him for doing so much to help his employees when they need it most.
