A powerful video shared to social media by the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources is going viral this week, and it shows deer, bears, bobcats, and other animals using the first wildlife overpass in the state.

“It’s working!” the department captioned the video, which depicts the overpass over Interstate 80.

“Thanks to the Utah Department of Transportation and Utah State University for monitoring the Parley’s Canyon wildlife overpass this year,” the department continued. “As you can see, the 2nd year of this overpass has been successful at helping wildlife safely migrate over busy Interstate 80 and helping motorists be much safer as well. Please keep off of this overpass. Thanks!”

Officials made the decision to make the overpass after 46 deer, 14 moose, and four elk were killed on that stretch of highway in just two years. The overpass is 48 feet wide and 330 feet long, and as you can see in the video below this story, it’s working like a charm!

“It’s great to see so many different animals using the overpass,” said UDOT spokesman John Gleason, according to The Smithsonian Magazine. He went on to explain that animals aren’t the only ones being helped by this overpass, as drivers are being protected by it as well.

“From what we can tell, the number of accidents there is down dramatically,” he added. “At least initially, it appears the investment in safety is paying off. And we expected it to take several years before the animals got used to using it, so this is great.”

The official statistics of the amount of lives that are being saved by this Utah overpass won’t be available for a few years. However, studies of similar wildlife crossings in Florida, Australia and Mexico have shown that they are effective in saving both human and animal lives by preventing collisions.

“You can get reductions of 85 to 95 percent with crossings and fencing that guide animals under or over highways,” Rob Ament, the road ecology program manager at the Western Transportation Institute at Montana State University, told National Geographic.

Last year, Gleason had expressed his shock at just how quickly animals were starting to use the overpass.

“We’re seeing results, and it’s an unexpected success to see results this early,” he told KSL.
