When Paula Grzelak-Schultz decided to enjoy a night out on the town with her date, they didn’t expect what was about to happen. The couple enjoyed their rare date night at the Original Joe’s Restaurant & Bar in Sherwood Park, Alberta, but at the end of the night they had a decision to make.

The couple had a blast at the bar and restaurant. They ate delicious food and they had knocked back a few drinks. It was exactly the night they had hoped for. When it came time to leave, however, the couple wasn’t sure what they should do. Should they risk driving home, or call a taxi and leave Paula’s car in the parking lot at the restaurant?

Ultimately, the couple decided it wasn’t worth the risk of drinking and driving and called an Uber driver. That was definitely the right decision considering that there are 10,000 drinking and driving related deaths each year in the United States alone.

The couple made it home safely from their evening out and planned to go get Paula’s car the next morning. When Paula arrived at the restaurant to get her car, she was shocked to find a note on the window. Worried it was a parking ticket for leaving her car in the lot, she was hesitant to open the note. Instead, she got a pleasant surprise.

The note was from the restaurant’s manager partner Jay McLean. The letter explained that they weren’t sure if she had been drinking in their establishment, but if she was, they thanked her for being responsible and not drinking and driving. The note went on to offer her one pound of free chicken wings for being responsible.

While many people are concerned about leaving their vehicle in a parking lot due to penalties, this restaurant actually rewards their customers for acting responsibly. What a relief for Paula and her husband!

More establishment should take this example and use it as a way to encourage their patrons to act responsibly and award them for making good decisions rather than punishing them for doing their part to reduce drinking and driving.
