Hollywood is in mourning today after it was reported that the legendary actor, director and producer Carl Reiner, best known for his work on “The Dick Van Dyke Show,” passed away on Monday night. He was 98 years-old.

Fox News reported that Reiner’s death was confirmed by his assistant Judy Nagy, who said he died of natural causes at his home in Beverly Hills, California.

Reiner had a hugely successful career in virtually all aspects of Hollywood that earned him tons of awards over the years. He’s arguably best known, however, for creating the beloved sitcom “The Dick Van Dyke Show,” which ran from 1961-1966. On top of producing the series, Reiner also guest starred on it as comedian Alan Brady, who terrorized Van Dyke’s character and his coworkers on the fictional television show they worked on.

“When asked, ‘Of all the theatrical projects you’ve done in your life, what are you most proud of?’ I always say, hands down, it’s creating and producing ‘The Dick Van Dyke Show.’ It was a labor of love,” Reiner said last year.

Born in 1922 to jewish immigrants in the Bronx, Reiner told Closer Weekly in 2019 that he spent much of his childhood watching movies starring his favorite comedians. He was hooked from there, and he immediately knew that he wanted to spend his life performing comedy.

“My parents loved comedies so we saw Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin, the Ritz Brothers and the Marx Brothers,” he explained. “I wanted to be one of them.”

Reiner ended up being drafted into the Air Force during World War II, but he didn’t let this derail his comedic dreams. Instead, he became a radio operator and toured as an actor, entertaining troops in Guam, Hawaii and Iwo Jima.

“Going through war and living is a very important process,” he later recalled. “You realize how vulnerable you are and how lucky you are to be in the right place at the right time. As a matter of fact, I have a history of luck.”

Once the war was over, Reiner headed to Hollywood, and the rest was history. He won countless awards in show business, including several Emmys and a even a Grammy for best spoken comedy album alongside Mel Brooks for their album “The 2000 Year Old Man in the Year 2000.”

Reiner also kept working right up until his death, most recently voicing the character of Carl Reinerocerous in Toy Story 4 last year.

Reiner was married to his beloved wife Estelle for 64 years before she passed away in 2008 at the age of 94. They are both survived by their three children Annie, Lucas as well as actor and director Rob Reiner.
