Weeks after Kelly Clarkson filed for divorce from her husband Brandon Blackstock, who she was married to for seven years, the singer and talk show host has admitted that she suffers from depression.

Daily Mail reported that Clarkson opened up about her mental health struggles during a discussion with her fellow singer Demi Lovato.

“I have similar issues, and I suffer from depression,” Clarkson said. “I think a lot of people, especially in the creative world, or just from childhood, you’ve been kind of trained to, like, just keep going and you can handle it.”

“Especially as a woman, it’s like, ‘Don’t let ’em see you sweat,'” she continued. “I just love that you’re open about that because not everybody is as vulnerable at being like that and I think it’s helpful for your fans because I know for a meet and greet, you probably get people saying that ‘I do too.'”

“Man, thank for just being open in your songs and being open with everybody because I felt like this was just me and like knowing that somebody else going through it makes you not feel alone and so depressed about it, so thank you for doing that,” Clarkson added. “It’s really hard.”

“You were, like, the first idol that I ever had,” a visibly touched Lovato replied. “I wouldn’t be the artist – or even the person that I am, with being so outspoken and vulnerable and fearless – if I hadn’t had you to look up to, so I thank you for that. When I was younger, I always thought to myself, “If I ever make it, I want to be like her because she’s real and she’s genuine.”‘

Clarkson, who is known for being humble, responded by once again showing how down to earth she is.

“I think the thing about it is even though your saying ‘oh your strong, courageous’ all those things, I’m not all the time,” Clarkson said. “It takes work, Like I think that’s the thing everybody looks at us like, even though you overcome something, they’re like, ‘Ok she’s already overcome that.’ No, no. That’s a daily effort – trying to be positive.”

“And it’s not like a given, like your just over it like you went to some magical therapy session and its over. I think that’s a daily thing you work at and I think I work at,” she added.

This comes weeks after Clarkson filed for divorce from Blackstock, who is the father of her two young children.

“It was a stressful time. Quarantining exacerbated any issues,” a source told People of the split. “Things had changed in their marriage and the split was a while coming. They both work so hard. It’s nearly impossible to enjoy each other, especially with the children needing constant attention.”

“Kelly’s been through a lot, and she thought Brandon was her happily ever after,” the insider added. “It’s very sad.”
