A community in Texas just came together to rally behind Sgt. Raymond Scholwinski, a law enforcement veteran of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office for 26 years, after learning that he had tested positive for COVID-19.

Earlier this month, local police officers gathered in the parking lot outside of the police department and delivered a powerful prayer for Scholwinski’s recovery. All attendees adhered to coronavirus social distancing guidelines by standing six feet apart from one another as they prayed.

“Keep my dad, our family and healthcare workers in your thoughts and prayers,” Scholwinski’s son Bryan said as he attended the prayer service.

Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said that Scholwinski, 70, isn’t the only local officer battling coronavirus, as 27 people in the Harris County Sheriff’s Office have tested positive for COVID-19.

“They are coming in fast now. Three more positives in the past two hours. 27 total now,” Gonzalez wrote on Twitter.

The prayer for Scholwinski was led by Lt. Shannon Bowdoin, who said:

“Father, we come to You now, and I come to you in the name of Jesus, and I ask you, Father, to touch this family. I especially ask you right now, Lord, to reach down into that hospital room where Ray is…and by Your sovereign strength, power and authority, will You touch every cell of his body? Father, bless each of us with Your presence. Let each of us know that You have never left us nor forsaken us, and on this Passover day that we would see death pass us over…”

Prayers have since poured in from all over the globe, and they appear to be working, as Scholwinski’s family says he is now in stable condition.

“God’s in control, we know that. We’re confident and we know he’s watching over our dad,” his son Anthony said.

“The overwhelming love, prayers, response, that we have received from people. It’s just amazing,” added Scholwinski’s wife Rynda. “It definitely makes me feel better. I mean, I’m very aware of that, we’re not out of the woods but seeing some stability is very encouraging for us.”
