Food banks receive cans of food from generous donors, and every once in awhile, an outdated food item ends up in the mix. Recently, a food bank in Cardiff received a can of sweet corn whose expiration date was in August of 1982. An employee decided to open the can on camera, and what was inside it has left the internet stunned.

The video opens with the employee running a can opener over the top of the can, which does not seem to have any dust or rust on it. Once she opens the can, she’s shocked to see that the corn looked just as fresh as if the can was recently bought from the store. She then smells it and though she says the corn does not smell bad, she adds that it has a very strong metallic odor.

This food bank also received a can of Heinz kidney soup, which is a flavor that’s no longer made. The can is believed to be 46 years-old!

Helen Bull, the trust’s partnership and fundraising manager, was asked why the food bank sometimes gets older donations.

“Especially at harvest time people empty their cupboards of food they no longer need. It’s out of a generous heart but I just think they don’t think and don’t necessarily look at the dates,” she said. “It would be great if anybody wants to give us lots of money for it. It should probably be in a museum.”

The can soon came to the attention of Heinz, and the company responded on Twitter.

“Wow! That soup was discontinued over 35 years ago. Should be in a museum rather than a food bank!” the company said.

Helen explained that she is hoping these viral finds will remind people to check expiration dates before donating.

“Sometimes we do end up throwing quite a lot of food out. We get an awful lot of out-of-date food,” Helen said. “It might remind people to give us in-date food.”
