When a group of firefighters saw an elderly woman in a wheelchair struggling to get to her door last week, they decided to spend their weekend building a walkway for her.

Webster Groves Firefighters Community Outreach in Missouri took to Facebook to say that their responders had been coming back from a call last week when they noticed an elderly woman attempting to maneuver her wheelchair across her front lawn.

“Multiple stairs and uneven terrain unfortunately led to the resident falling over in her wheelchair while trying to enter the house,” the fire department wrote. “Luckily the patient was uninjured, but we saw an opportunity to help.”

The group of firefighters later came back to the woman’s home and spent their days off paving a new concrete walkway to her front door.

“She will now will have a level pathway and ramp to gain access to her home,” the fire department said. “A huge thank you goes out to the members that spent their days off helping those in need.”

Social media users have since been praising the firefighters for their good deed.

“That’s what it’s all about! Neighbors helping neighbors. Job well done, guys!” one user wrote, with another adding, “That was so very kind of you Firefighters to share your off time to help someone in need. Thank you so much for your service that you do in saving people.”

“Way to take care of those in need,” a third user commented. “What a nice gesture on your days off. Thank you.”
