A few weeks ago, a man created a satirical Facebook event for people to “storm Area 51” in an attempt to expose evidence of alien life to the public.

Much to his surprise, the event quickly went viral, and the internet was flooded with hilarious Area 51 memes.

Noting the online trend, one Oklahoma animal shelter decided to take advantage of it by asking their followers to “storm their shelter” instead.

The OKC Animal Welfare center in Oklahoma City took to Facebook last week to post various photos of their dogs wearing adorable alien costumes.

“We have great animals ready to protect you from the Area 51 aliens,” wrote the shelter. “Adoption isn’t that far out of this world!”

Their post went viral as well, and before long, they were flooded with offers from people using the hashtag #StormOurShelter.

In the week after the post went up, dozens of animals were adopted from the shelter, and over $2,500 in donations have poured in!

While the shelter has not disclosed exactly how many of their animals have been adopted since the hashtag went up, they have said that their adoption campaign was a viral success.

“The response to #StormTheShelter has been out of this world! Thank you all who have supported, shared, donated and adopted,” wrote the shelter.

“Let’s continue to show everyone that adoption isn’t that far out of this world and support your local shelters!”

It’s so refreshing to see a funny internet meme being used to find forever homes for animals in need.

We hope this trend continues, and that people will keep storming the shelter!
