When a woman finds out she is expecting, one of the most important things on her list is to find a good doctor to take care of her during her pregnancy and delivery. Each doctor has their own way of doing things, and the mother needs to make sure that their methods align with the expectations she has.

Unfortunately for some women, they don’t get to find out exactly what their doctor does the day of their delivery until the day actually comes. One doctor in particular has become well known for his unusual habit when a new baby enters the world.

At Magee-Women’s Hospital of UPMC, Dr. Carey Andrew-Jaja has an especially unique practice that he says was taught and handed down to him while he was still a resident in medical school.

It’s not necessarily what he does during the delivery itself, it’s what he does to the babies as soon as they are born. He’s brought thousands of babies into the world and is highly respected in the community. So what exactly does this doctor do after he delivers a baby?

What Dr. Andrew-Jaja does is something that his colleagues wouldn’t even dream of doing. He is known as the “singing doctor” because he welcomes each baby into the world by singing them a song. He belts out the tune in the delivery room, and is often joined by the staff and sometimes even the new parents joins in!

He says he was asked by a doctor during his residency if he sang to his babies to which he replied yes. It was then that the torch was handed down to Dr. Andrew-Jaja. The other doctor had sang to babies for decades and wanted someone to carry on the tradition, so he did.

Sometimes he sings “Happy Birthday” and sometimes he sings other songs to them; just whatever song comes to mind. He says he sings to each and every baby he delivers and feels like he’s singing to a future important person.

He says every baby’s life is valuable and they’ve all been blessed with unique gifts. The family in the video below caught Dr. Andrew-Jaja singing to their newest addition. The doctor says this baby is special because he considers the baby a grandbaby. Not because the newborn is biologically his newborn, but because he also had the privilege of delivering his father.
