Leslie Howe recently paid a visit to Gwinnett County park with her baby and two other small children when she came upon a furry little creature that looked odd to her. The strange creature was so small that it looked to be harmless, but something in Leslie’s gut told her to stay away from it, so she made sure to avoid contact with the creature.
It was only afterwards that Leslie learned just how correct her instinct was, as the creature is actually carrying something very dangerous underneath it’s fur. In avoiding the creature, Leslie saved herself and the children with her from horrific stings of a puss caterpillar that is loaded with venom. Just one little touch from this creature can result in a sting that is just as painful as one from a wasp or a jellyfish would be.
It’s rare that you will actually come in contact with a puss caterpillar because they are typically hidden away high in the treetops. However, these caterpillars have recently been making their way down to the ground more often, making them more dangerous to children who come in contact with them. That’s why experts are trying to get the word out about how dangerous these harmless looking creatures really are.
If you are the parent of a small child who enjoys playing outside, have a talk with them about this particular type of caterpillar and warn them to stay away from it. They may look like warm and fuzzy little guys, but they are actually anything but that! Find out more about this in the video below.
