Benny Hill is known for being one of the most popular comedians in British history, but a new book has revealed that behind the scenes, life wasn’t as good for him as his fans would believe.

In his new book “True Confessions of a Shameless Gossip,” Hollywood journalist Craig Bennett recalls talking to the late Australian actress Sarah Kemp, one of Hill’s closest friends, about the comedian for hours. Kemp said that Hill would often confide in her that he felt unloved and unattractive to women, even though he had something of an oversexed persona onscreen.

Kemp also said that while Hill was worth millions, he was incredibly frugal. In fact, he had such a phobia about spending money that he would often wear the same clothes until they were threadbare and even would glue the soles of his shoes back on when they became loose. Hill would only buy groceries when they were on sale, and he would often walk to work rather than pay for a taxi.

Hill, who died back in 1992 at the age of 68, is best remembered today for “The Benny Hill Show,” which was loved by fans all over the world. Running between 1955 and 1991, the show would include short comedic sketches that were often risqué by nature.

Hill brought joy and laughter to millions of fans all over the world, so it’s sad to hear that he was so insecure and depressed in his private life. Sometimes, it really is the most tortured souls who end up being able to make others laugh the most, as they realize the importance of humor more than anyone.

Rest in peace Mr. Hill!
