In a move that has sparked both local and national outrage, Tyler Carlin, an eighth-grade student at Celina Middle School in Ohio, was suspended after he included a Nerf gun in a memorial he created to honor military veterans.

The young student’s tribute was intended to recreate the iconic “battle cross” monument—a solemn symbol traditionally composed of a rifle, helmet, and boots—to commemorate those who have lost their lives serving their country.

However, it was the inclusion of the Nerf gun that led to his suspension, a decision that has ignited a debate over school policies and respect for veterans.

Tyler, who has a deep personal connection to the military through family friends who served in Vietnam, felt compelled to honor veterans with this tribute.

“This means so much to me because that was the last chance that… the military, their friends got to say goodbye to them and then they had to go back out and fight,” Tyler explained.

“Also, my dad’s friend is like a grandpa to me. And he, like, showed me his war stories from Vietnam… he just showed me all about that.” His recreation of the battle cross was a way for him to express his respect and gratitude towards those who have sacrificed their lives.

Despite Tyler’s heartfelt intentions, the school administration viewed his actions differently.

The principal of Celina Middle School decided to suspend Tyler, citing the school’s zero-tolerance policy on weapons, even look-alike ones.

According to a statement made to The Todd Starnes Show, the school justified the suspension on the grounds that Tyler was “bringing a look-alike weapon to school and creating a disturbance.”

The suspension has not only impacted Tyler’s school record but has also ignited a wave of support from the local community.

“The community is standing behind me on this,” Tyler said, noting that protests have been held in his support and continue to this day.

The outpouring of solidarity underscores a broader concern among many who believe that the school’s decision was an overreach and that Tyler’s actions were a sincere tribute rather than a threat.

Tyler’s attorney, Travis Faber, has been actively working to challenge the suspension and clear Tyler’s record.

“After he had started serving the suspension and we had some time to look into this, we said ‘this is ridiculous, can you make the suspension go away and apologize to Tyler for what you did and we’ll make this all go away’ and they refused to do that,” Faber stated. “We’re going to do whatever we have to, to make this right.”

The situation has highlighted the tension between strict school policies and the need to consider the context and intent behind students’ actions.

While schools have a responsibility to maintain safety, many argue that Tyler’s case was mishandled, particularly given the symbolic and non-threatening nature of a Nerf gun in a veteran’s memorial.

As the protests continue and Tyler’s case gains more attention, it remains to be seen whether the school administration will reconsider its stance or whether the matter will escalate further.

For now, Tyler and his supporters remain determined to see justice served, not only for him but for the message it sends about honoring those who have served the nation.
