We all have heard that a dog can be a loyal companion to their owner, but they can also be a loyal companion to another animal; so is the case of Merrill and Taco. The pitbull and chihuahua are the best of friends. When it was time for one of them to be adopted, the other refused to go without his buddy. Would they be able to stay together forever, or stay stuck in an animal shelter?
The unlikely pair met at the Rocket Dog Rescue shelter where they lived together for years. The shelter takes in homeless dogs that are good-natured and keeps them until they can find a forever home. This protects the dogs from being the victim of high kill shelters where they would be put down if not adopted soon enough. Regardless of their age, the Rocket Dog Rescue takes in dogs that they deem adoptable, and Merrill and Taco fit the bill.
When Merrill, the three-year-old pitbull came to the rescue, he needed emergency surgery to save his life. Merrill made it through surgery, and his dedicated friend stayed by his side every step of the recovery. Taco, an eight-year-old chihuahua, cuddled and tended to his big friend proving that they were inseparable.

The dogs cared for each other so much that if they were separated, even for Merrill to go for a checkup, both of them would cry loudly until they were reunited.
The day came when someone wanted to adopt one of the pups. Merrill’s new family came to get him, but he refused to leave his tiny friend behind. It was Merrill who was proving his love and loyalty this time around. Both of them cried and begged not to be separated.

Luckily, Merrill’s new family realized that the two were a match made in heaven and decided to adopt both of them so they could stay together. Both Taco and Merrill went home with their new owner and were happy to still be together.
Some bonds can never be broken and Taco and Merrill are proof of that. Thanks to their new owner, they’ll be able to spend the rest of their lives together in a happy, loving home.
