Two years ago, Mandy Harvey earned herself millions of fans when she appeared on “America’s Got Talent.” Even the notoriously hard to please judge Simon Cowell could not deny just how talented she was!

Before she sang, Mandy revealed that she has been deaf for the past ten years, ever since she was 18. The experience of losing her hearing was devastating, as she could no longer enjoy the music she had always loved.

“I lost the ability to hear the piano, and that’s when I started to crack,” she said.

Mandy explained that she was born with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome type 3, a connective tissue disorder that caused her to lose her hearing. Things got even worse for her when she was in high school and had six major leg surgeries.

“My body attacked itself, and so over a period of nine months I lost the ability to hear,” Mandy said. “The nerves in my brain kind of fried themselves.”

She got hearing aids that she nicknamed “Hope,” but this did not give her the amount of help she needed.

“Everything was just a description of what used to be,” Mandy.

The experience of losing her hearing made Mandy question her strong Christian faith. She also dropped from the vocal music education program at Colorado State University.

“Having my world be swallowed seemed to happen overnight, but as far as my faith goes — you start out with the typical things,” she said. “I had prayed every prayer you can think of.”

Though she almost gave up music entirely, she was encouraged by her loved ones not to, as they “refused to give up on me when I gave up on myself.” One day, everything changed for Mandy when he convinced her to play the guitar with him.

“I was strumming the guitar and I could feel the vibrations of the instrument,” Harvey said.

Since then, Mandy has found that she could rediscover her music through the vibrations. She even performs with her shoes off so she can feel the beat and tempo of the music through the floor, and her singing voice can only be described as incredible.

“I was singing with such freedom, because I just didn’t care,” Mandy said. “I have always been scared to sing in front of other people.”

Mandy won herself millions of fans on “America’s Got Talent,” where she came in fourth place.

“I wanted to … encourage people and show that it’s okay to fail,” she said. “I wanted to show a different side of what a disability looked like.”

These days, Mandy travels the world performing and sharing her faith in God.

“God is not a bully with a stick … it’s not some kind of cosmic joke. He’s a dad watching his kids suffer and he’s crying with you,” she said. “Bad things happen … you live on Earth. It’s a broken place. It’s full of muck and mess and people who have freewill who make horrible decisions.”

“It’s not our job to understand what tomorrow’s going to look like,” Mandy concluded. “It’s our job to keep walking the path of faith, regardless of what happens.”
