A Canadian man is going to be very rich after he found a massive 61-pound pearl that may be one of the North America’s rarest and most beautiful treasures.
Abraham Reyes explained that it was a unique and torturous chain of events that led to him finding what is being called the “Giga Pearl,” which is believed to be one of the largest pearls in the world. The pearl is thought to be around 1,000 years-old, and it was hidden inside of a giant clam that Reyes’ grandfather bought from a Philippines fisherman as a gift for Reyes’s aunt back in 1959.
The aunt kept the pearl for decades at her home in Manila along with the rest of her art and antiquities collection. Reyes and his aunt always loved the treasure, but the rest of their family did not really see anything special about it. He said that many of his relatives did not even know about the pearl’s existence.

In 2016, Reyes’ aunt began offloading her estate, and while her family claimed her house and possessions, they passed on the pearl to him. Reyes, who lives in Mississauga, Ontario, has been keeping the pearl in a safety deposit box until he could have it examined and evaluated by geological specialists.
When he finally got the pearl tested, Reyes was proven right when the gemstone was found to be four times the size of the Lao-Tzu pearl, which previously held the record for being the largest pearl in the world. Experts have said that the pearl is worth between $60 and $90 million.
Though the pearl is incredibly valuable, Reyes has no intention of selling it. Instead, he is hoping to put it on display in galleries all over the world so that others can see how beautiful it is.
“I believe the world should know that it does exist,” Reyes said. “To me, I feel very honored to have it. I feel a great responsibility.”
