A prized show dog has been reunited with her owner after she was lost at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport last weekend.
Gale is an American Staffordshire Terrier who went missing last Saturday after being checked in for a flight near the international terminal. Officials at the airport said that Gale got out of her crate and went running onto the airfield.
The airport immediately called Steven Boyd and Jeff Miller, who are airport wildlife biologists. They typically are tasked with keeping wildlife off the runway and the property, but they quickly switched gears to help find the missing dog.
After a massive search of the 4,700-acre property, a big break came when Gale was spotted in a section of the airport known as the rock quarry. Steven and Jeff spent days searching for the missing dog, even doing so during a hailstorm.
“We had some pretty serious searching across the entire airport but we knew that she was moving into the rock quarry,” Jeff said.
On Monday morning, Gale was once again seen in the same area of the airport.
“We focused most of our searching there because we knew she was not coming out,” Jeff said, with Steven adding, “We were under the impressions that she was there for cover and water.”
“It is a stormwater runoff basin, so with the rain last night, there could have been a low-level of water that could have been hazardous for her,” Steven explained.
Finally, on Tuesday morning, the two brought Gale’s owner to the rock quarry to try to lure her out. After about twenty minutes of the owner calling her name, Gale ran right to him from her hiding place. We’re so glad her story had a happy ending!
