Juan Manuel Pina is being hailed as a hero this week after he courageously put his life on the line to rescue a 53 year-old man from a burning vehicle.
Juan was driving his wife and three children to a local shopping mall when he noticed a car flipped on it’s side. Without hesitating, Juan took action.
“It’s smoking in the front right. I start parking and I say my wife you call 911,” Juan recounted. “It’s no more people just one. One guy. I told the guy calm down. Calm down.”
Finally, another Good Samaritan pulled over and helped Juan get the 53 year-old man out of the car. Seconds later, the vehicle went up in flames.
“The little explosion in the front of the car and it started a fire with the car,” Juan said.
Harrowing cellphone footage captured the rescue, and the footage has since gone viral. Officials say that the man would not have survived were it not for Juan’s quick thinking, and days later, the Good Samaritan was honored for what he did by the West Whiteland Township Police. Juan’s 8 year-old son Jesus, who witnessed the rescue, was with him when he received the honor.
“We was taking pictures. The newspaper person was taking a picture of us,” Jesus said of the incident. “I hope he doesn’t get in the hospital (because it looked dangerous right?) Yeah. Yeah.”
Detective Scott Pezick explained that the victim was hearing impaired and that he had lost control of his car when going around a curve.
“I think it was very brave their first instinct was to get out of the car and help him right away,” he said. “I don’t think they stopped and thought. We see a lot of people stand and don’t know what to do. They just went with instinct and got out and helped him.”
Thank God Juan was in the right place at the right time to save this man!
