A Texas woman is being hailed as a hero after she went above and beyond to save a 5 year-old girl after a hit-and-run in Austin.

It all started at around 8am last Thursday morning, when Angela Guzman was driving her son to an appointment. As she drove, she was stunned to see a manic driver in a black truck coming straight for her.

“I noticed this truck driving really fast past me, I happened to look in my rearview mirror, saw the accident and turned around [to] make sure everybody was okay,” Angela recalled.

As she turned her car around to help, Angela noticed the black truck speeding away. She then focused all her attention on the car that had been hit, as she heard a man screaming from the sunroof of the vehicle.

“At first he was saying, ‘I smell gas, I smell gas’ and then all of a sudden, ‘My daughter’s not breathing, my daughter, my daughter!’” she said.

When she opened the back door, she saw the little girl in the back seat.

“She wasn’t breathing,” Angela said. “She had a big gash on her forehead, so I pulled her out as softly as I could, laid her on the floor and just started CPR.”

Luckily for the family, Angela is a trained nursing assistant, and she immediately started performing CPR on the child. Sure enough, the little girl started breathing again before paramedics arrived seconds later.

“I was just making sure she was okay,” Angela explained. “That’s all that was going through my mind, just getting her to breathe again.”

The 5 year-old girl was rushed to Dell Children’s Medical Center, where she remains in critical condition. Though no arrests have been made yet, police say that they believe they know the identity of the driver and that he will likely soon face charges of failure to stop and render aid.
