Dogs have long been known as man’s best friend because of the amount of love and loyalty that they show humans. Moxie is a Golden Retriever who just showed the world how loving and loyal dogs can really be when she saved her owner from committing suicide.
Christy Gardner is a former Army Sergeant who lost both her legs while serving her country. When she returned home to Lewiston, Maine, the 36 year-old veteran got Moxie to help her with her everyday tasks. She had no idea at the time that Moxie would save her life.
“She’s absolutely been a life saver. Quite literally,” Christy said. “That dog saved my life.”
Like millions of other veterans, Christy suffered from PTSD that was so bad that it nearly caused her to kill herself. It was Moxie who brought her back from the edge.
“The way she would just look at you. Her eyes would go right through to your soul,” Christy recalled. “And I felt like I was disappointing her. And so having her by my side was the only reason I didn’t kill myself.”
Christy is now doing much better, and she wants to repay the debt to Moxie in any way she can.
“I feel like she deserves so much more,” she said.
To repay Moxie, Christy decided to pay it forward by taking in a disabled puppy named Tiny Tim and training him to be a service dog at a local elementary school. She thinks that the puppy can help the children at the school feel better about themselves, just like how Moxie helped her.
“There is just so much about him that is so perfect for this little mission of his. I think the kids are going to say, ‘Well, he had all these problems and he didn’t give up and look how happy he is,'” Christy said.
Before he can become a certified service dog, Tiny Tim needs surgery to have his bad leg removed. Christy has been working multiple jobs to pay for the surgery, but the pet food supply company Vetriscience just stepped in to offer a $10,000 donation to fund the operation. Now, nothing can stop Tiny Tim!
“Now Tiny Tim is going to save the town,” the veteran added. “It’s pretty cool.”
