A school principal from Texas is being applauded for going above and beyond to make sure her students can have a bedtime story read to them at least once a week.
Belinda George is the 42 year-old principal at Homer Drive Elementary in Beaumont, and she has created a tradition called “Tucked In Tuesdays” that has her reading a children’s book in her pajamas on Facebook live at night. Every Tuesday, she cozies up in her pajamas to read a bedtime story to her students, who earn reader reward points for tuning in.
At first, Belinda started doing this as a way to connect to students at her own school, so she was stunned when kids from all over the country started tuning in. Belinda is hoping that her “Tucked In Tuesdays” will encourage her students to learn to read, as their literacy scores have been down in recent years. She explained that life is hard for her students since 94% of them come from impoverished homes.
Belinda has only been the principal at Homer Drive for a year, but since she took over, literacy and reading comprehension scores for her students have dramatically increased. She credits some of this to “Tucked In Tuesdays,” and as long as this continues to help her students, Belinda plans to keep doing it.
“The bottom line is I love, love kids,” Belinda said. “I know if I don’t reach them outside of school, I [may] never reach them in school.”
