Maureen Lawson is a special education teacher in Stillwater, Oklahoma who just captured a sweet moment on camera that has since gone viral, touching the hearts of people all over the world.
Maureen teaches special education at Westwood Elementary School, and this year, she got a new 10 year-old student named Sophie, who suffers from Down syndrome. At first, Maureen was not sure how she would adapt to being in her class, as this can be especially hard for children with disabilities.
“Sometimes friendships for children living with cognitive [dis]abilities is a hard thing,” Maureen said.
Thankfully, Sophie immediately bonded with an 8 year-old classmate named Graham, who also has Down syndrome. Before long, the two were completely in separable!
“They both gravitated toward each other really quickly and just became just really good buddies and don’t really like to be separated very much,” Maureen said.
On Valentine’s Day last month, Maureen was surprised to find Sophie and Graham dancing together. There was no music playing, and they had never danced together before, but the two kids were clearly having a blast doing it!
“I had never seen them dance before,” Maureen said. “They were just doing something sweet and fun. They are just best friends.”
“It’s a very unique friendship,” she added.
Maureen was so touched by the moment that she decided to film it and post it online. The footage has quickly gone viral, being viewed over 62,000 times!
“That’s called love at first sight!! Made my day seeing this,” one social media user commented, with another adding, “Aww their both so freaking cute dancing together.”
