A Great Dane has become a viral sensation after she gave birth to a whopping litter of nineteen puppies!
The average litter size for a Great Dane is ten puppies, and thirteen is considered to be a very large size for a litter. That’s why this enormous litter came as a huge surprise to everyone.
When Cleo the Great Dane got pregnant, her owners quickly noticed that she was becoming particularly tired. She also ballooned to a weight of 143 pounds, which is around 43 pounds heavier than the average Great Dane.
Her owners started to realize that she was likely pregnant with a larger than normal litter, so they brought her to Kingman Animal Hospital in Arizona for some extra help. Veterinarians there made the decision to give Cleo a C-section, which is rarely done with Great Danes.
During the delivery of the puppies, the veterinarian and his assistants were stunned by the seeming “never-ending” litter of puppies!
“We lost count,” said the company’s administrator. “We used just as many hands as we could get.”
Eleven staffers ended up having to assist with the forty minute delivery. Thankfully, Cleo and all nineteen of her puppies were happy and healthy afterwards!
Believe it or not, Cleo did not end up breaking the Guinness World Record for the largest delivery of puppies. This record is held by a Neapolitan mastiff who delivered 24 puppies back in 2004. However, she may indeed hold the record for most Great Danes delivered at one time!
