Bronislaw “Grom” Karwowski was a decorated veteran of World War II from Poland who served alongside his British, American, and Soviet counterparts following Germany’s invasion of Poland in 1939.

Grom was part of the 1944 Warsaw Uprising, an effort to wrest the city from German occupation, and was later captured by the Nazis. He managed to escape the Gestapo only to be captured again, and he was sentenced to a decade in prison for opposing communist rule in Poland after the war ended. Grom was later awarded for all of this with the Knight’s Cross of The Order of the Rebirth of Poland.

Decades later, Grom had one more thing to accomplish, and that was walking his 30-year-old granddaughter Joanna Sema down the aisle last month. Guests at the wedding tried to hold back their tears as Grom walked his granddaughter down the aisle to her waiting groom.

“He promised he would walk me down the aisle and he kept his word,” Joanna said.

Before he handed Joanna over to the groom, Grom whispered to her, “I was looking forward to this moment and I am proud I have lived to see it.”

The 94 year-old suffered from a series of health problems, but he was determined to make it to Joanna’s wedding. After he fulfilled his promise of walking her down the aisle, Joanna fulfilled the promise she made him that she would not let him die in a hospital. Just two days after the wedding, 79 years to the day after Germany invaded Poland, Grom passed away with Joanna by his side.

“I said goodbye to him and he said he was so proud that the news of him walking me down the aisle had been reported. He said to me, ‘We’re on Facebook!'” Joanna recalled.
