On Thursday, 97 year-old Prince Philip was in a major car crash when he flipped his Land Rover while driving near the royal family’s Sandringham estate. Now, everyone is wondering if his wife Queen Elizabeth will finally put her foot down and force him to stop driving once and for all.

The palace is saying that Philip was not hurt in the crash, but at his age, it’s being speculated that he might be a danger to other motorists should he continue to drive. He certainly does not need to drive, as the royal family employs chauffeurs who drive them everywhere. However, Philip seems to believe that as long as he is in good health, there is no reason for him to stop driving.

Prince Charles has previously expressed worries about his father’s determination to continue driving, yet Philip has stubbornly refused to hand over his license thus far. The Queen may be the only person who can convince Philip to stop driving, but sources say that it’s unlikely that she will outright force him to do anything.

“The reason their relationship has worked so well for so many years is that neither has forced the other to do something,” said a former lady-in-waiting for the Queen.

While Philip escaped unscathed this time, it can’t be denied that he was extremely lucky to make it out of this crash alive. At his age, even the smallest of accidents can prove to be a fatal one, and the last thing the royals want is for Philip to cause a car accident that harms somebody else.
