We’ve all had moments where we decided to hold in a sneeze, but a disturbing new report is letting people know that doing this could be a very bad idea.

The report, which was published in BMJ Case Reports, is about a 34 year-old man from the United Kingdom who held in a sneeze to the point where he ended up rupturing his throat. The man, who was fit at the time, tried to hold in the sneeze by pinching his nose and closing his mouth. He then felt a popping sensation in his neck, after which his neck swelled up and he had trouble swallowing.

By the time the man got to the emergency room, he had lost his voice and doctors heard a cracking sound in his neck when they examined him. This is a telltale sign that air bubbles had seeped into his chest.

Doctors quickly realized that the man had torn his pharynx, which is the part of your throat that connects your nose and mouth to your esophagus, when he tried to hold in the sneeze. The man had to be admitted to the hospital and given a feeding tube until the tear healed up. It took a week before he could finally leave the hospital, and two months later, he had made a full recovery.

We bet that this man, and anyone who read this, will think twice before holding in a sneeze again! Please SHARE this story so your friends and family can see this as well!
