Zainab Mughal is a 2 year-old girl from Florida who suffers from a rare and aggressive form of cancer called neuroblastoma. This type of cancer occurs when a solid tumor arises in the nervous system, outside of the brain.
Doctors told Zainab’s parents that her cancer was “high risk,” which means she has only a 40-50% chance of surviving the next 5 years without successful treatment. She has the rarest blood type in the world which left her with just a 4% chance of finding a donor, so the organization OneBlood teamed up with her family to help them find one.

Zainab’s blood is missing the Indian-B antigen, which means that any blood transfusion she gets has to come from a blood type match AND another person missing this antigen, or else her body will reject the blood.

Zainab’s exact type of blood can only be found in people from Iran, Pakistan, and India, which made finding a donor even more difficult. On top of that, the organization has to find least 7-10 donors who can have their blood donations to cover the entirety of Zainab’s cancer treatments.
Thankfully, three donors have already been found, with one of them being a 50 year-old woman living in the United Kingdom. She said that she felt “very humbled” to play a “small part” in helping this little girl.
“I do hope the publicity encourages more people to donate, especially from the Asian community,” she said. “Even a single donation can make a massive difference to someone who needs it.”

The other two donors came from people living in the United States, but more donors still need to be found to save Zainab. Here is the full list of criteria for Zainab’s donors:
1) someone fit to donate blood, 2) who is exclusively of Pakistani, Iranian, or Indian origin (meaning the donor’s birth parents are both from the area), 3) type O or A, and 4) missing the Indian-B antigen.

Please keep this little girl in your thoughts and prayers, and SHARE this story so we can help to find her a donor!
