Royal Caribbean’s Empress of the Seas cruise ship just rescued two Costa Rican fishermen who had been lost at sea for three weeks.

Royal Caribbean Chief Meteorologist James Van Fleet took to Twitter to say that the fishermen were rescued last Friday night. The fishermen were particularly lucky because the cruise ship was not originally scheduled to be in their vicinity, and they only ended up being there because they were diverted due to bad weather.

The fishermen had left Porto Limon, Costa Rica on December 1, and they had been adrift ever since.

“Winds picked up and when they woke up, they were blown way off where their gear had been,” Van Fleet explained. “They ran out of gas trying to get back and were adrift for those 20 days.”

“One of the fishermen could no longer walk and our crew literally carried him to the tender and carried him on board,” he continued. “Pure luck, lining of the stars, God, whatever you choose to believe, the facts are we would not have been in that area at the time had we not switched to go to Ocho Rios, Jamaica, and you can’t help but think there was a greater plan in all of this.”

“I’ve already seen a Christmas miracle – 20 days at sea should tell you everything about the odds of them being found alive,” Van Fleet continued.

What an amazing Christmas miracle! We’re so glad that these fishermen were rescued and are now safe and sound!
